What Are Connecting-Rod Bearings?

Inside every reciprocating engine, the connecting rods link the pistons to the crankshaft. Each rod rotates around a crankshaft journal — a precision-ground cylindrical surface — and the interface between the two is managed by a pair of replaceable bearing shells known as rod bearings or big-end bearings.

These shells are not bolted directly to the journal. Instead, they rely on a hydrodynamic oil film: as the crankshaft rotates, engine oil is drawn into the narrow clearance between the journal and the bearing surface, forming a pressurised wedge that keeps the two surfaces separated. Under normal operating conditions, the bearing and crank journal should not be in direct metal-to-metal contact. It is this oil film that carries the load.

Because the bearing shells are a serviceable component, they can be inspected and replaced without replacing the crankshaft or connecting rods — provided those components remain within specification.

Does the BMW S55 Have Rod-Bearing Problems?

The BMW S55 is not generally regarded as having an endemic rod-bearing issue in the way that some earlier BMW M engines have been discussed. Many S55 engines cover substantial mileage without any rod-bearing concerns.

That said, rod bearings are highly loaded internal wear components. Their condition over time is influenced by mileage, lubrication quality, engine use, operating temperatures, modifications and a range of other factors. They are not immune to wear, and they are not designed to last indefinitely.

Some S55 owners — particularly those with higher-mileage, tuned, hard-driven or track-used cars — choose preventative replacement as part of a broader engine maintenance programme. This is a considered decision rather than a response to a known factory defect.

What Causes Rod Bearings to Wear?

Bearing wear is rarely the result of a single cause. Contributing factors typically include a combination of the following:

  • Normal accumulated mileage and engine hours
  • Oil condition — degraded or contaminated oil reduces film strength
  • Interrupted or inadequate oil supply
  • Sustained high oil and engine temperatures
  • Repeated high engine load, particularly at elevated RPM
  • Track use and aggressive driving cycles
  • Bearing clearance — both from new and as wear accumulates
  • Crankshaft journal condition and surface finish
  • General long-term fatigue of the bearing material

Understanding that wear is multifactorial is important. There is rarely a single smoking gun, and the same engine specification can behave very differently depending on how it has been used and maintained.

Why Engine Oil Matters

Engine oil is not simply a lubricant — it is the medium through which rod bearings function. Without a continuous supply of clean oil at the correct viscosity and pressure, the hydrodynamic film that separates the bearing from the journal cannot be maintained.

As the crankshaft rotates, oil is drawn into the converging gap between the journal and bearing shell, building pressure that supports the rotating assembly. Oil viscosity, operating temperature, oil supply volume and bearing clearance all interact to determine how effectively this film is maintained under load.

Good servicing practice — using an appropriate oil specification and changing it at correct intervals — is therefore one of the most straightforward ways to support bearing longevity. It is worth noting that thicker oil is not automatically better. Viscosity must be matched to the engine’s design, operating temperature range and bearing clearances. Using an inappropriate specification can be as detrimental as neglecting oil changes.

For tuned and track-driven S55 vehicles, Swift Performance may recommend an alternative performance oil specification depending on power level and intended use. This is something we discuss with customers on an individual basis.

It is also worth noting that heavy engine load — sustained high RPM or hard acceleration — should generally be avoided until the engine oil has reached a suitable operating temperature. Cold, high-viscosity oil does not flow as readily, and the oil film is less effective until the system has fully warmed through.

Symptoms of Rod-Bearing Wear

Early-stage bearing wear may produce no obvious symptoms at all. This is one reason why preventative inspection or replacement is sometimes considered on higher-mileage or hard-used engines, rather than waiting for a problem to become apparent.

More advanced bearing deterioration may potentially be associated with:

  • Abnormal mechanical knocking or rumbling noise from the engine
  • Metallic particles found in drained engine oil
  • Metallic debris present in the oil filter
  • Changes in oil pressure in more severe cases

It is important to note that these symptoms can have a range of other causes. Proper diagnosis is always required before drawing conclusions. An engine knock does not automatically indicate rod-bearing failure, and the absence of symptoms does not guarantee that bearings are in good condition.

Why Swift Performance Uses ACL Race Series Bearings

ACL Race Series bearings are manufactured to performance tolerances and incorporate a number of design features suited to demanding applications:

  • Increased bearing crush and retention for secure shell location
  • Performance-oriented bearing geometry

The 6B1584H/STD designation indicates a standard-size bearing — not an extra-clearance variant. As with any bearing replacement, crankshaft journal condition and bearing clearance should be inspected during installation to confirm the components are within specification. ACL bearings are a quality upgrade, but no bearing is a guarantee against future wear.

Why We Use New OEM BMW Rod Bolts

Connecting-rod fasteners are safety-critical engine components. The rod bolts clamp the bearing cap to the connecting rod and must be installed to the correct preload to ensure the bearing shell is properly retained and the assembly functions as designed.

Swift Performance fits new OEM BMW connecting-rod bolts as standard with every S55 rod-bearing package. Rod bolts are torque-to-yield fasteners — they are designed for single use — and reusing the original bolts is not something we consider acceptable practice on an engine rebuild of this nature.

What About ARP Rod Bolts?

Our standard S55 rod-bearing package uses new OEM BMW bolts, which are appropriate for the majority of road and modified S55 applications.

For higher-output, high-RPM or more severe-duty engine builds, an upgraded ARP rod-bolt option is also available from Swift Performance. ARP fasteners offer increased clamping load and are a consideration for engines operating at significantly elevated power levels or in sustained competition use.

This is an optional upgrade and does not mean that every tuned S55 requires ARP bolts. If you are planning a significant power increase or a more demanding build specification, we would encourage you to discuss your engine requirements with us directly so we can advise on the most appropriate specification.

Why Replace the Rod Bearings With the Crank Hub?

Replacing S55 rod bearings as a standalone job requires substantial workshop time. Gaining access to the bottom end of the engine involves removing the sump and a significant amount of surrounding ancillary work — strip-down and reassembly that represents a considerable portion of the overall labour cost.

During Swift Performance’s S55 crank-hub installation, we already remove the engine sump as part of the procedure. Because the sump and surrounding components are already off the engine, replacing the rod bearings at the same time avoids repeating a large amount of that strip-down and reassembly work.

Replacing the rod bearings during our crank-hub installation can save approximately six hours of duplicated workshop labour compared with completing the jobs separately.

For owners who are already committing to a crank-hub upgrade, this makes the bearing replacement a particularly cost-effective addition to the scope of work.

Should You Replace S55 Rod Bearings Preventatively?

Preventative rod-bearing replacement is not automatically required on every S55. Many engines will cover high mileage without issue, and there is no universal threshold at which replacement becomes necessary.

Factors an owner might reasonably consider include:

  • Mileage and engine hours
  • Known vehicle and service history
  • Oil change frequency and specification used
  • Current or planned engine power output
  • Track use or competition history
  • Planned future tuning or modifications
  • Driving style and typical operating conditions
  • Whether overlapping work — such as a crank-hub installation — is already being carried out

That last point is particularly relevant. The significant labour overlap with a crank-hub installation is one of the primary reasons some owners choose to address the rod bearings at the same time, even if they have no specific concern about their current condition.
